Designate and mark an area in the front of the classroom to collect the clothing items for the Clothes Swap brought in by the students. Ideally, this will be in the same room as the Susty Fashion Workshop and include enough floor space to spread the items out on tables or the floor.
This allows students to gather some initial materials, begin their Fit in the workshop, and potentially get additional items from the Clothes Swap if needed.
Designate and mark another area or box for fabric scraps in the Workshop area so they are also available for use by students.
Have zip-lock bags available for students who create tie-dye items so they can take them home at the end of the class.
Open the Lesson 3 Slides in a separate tab. Share slides with students as they are listed in the lesson plan below.
Overview:
Students participate in a Clothing Swap to extend the life of unworn clothes. Each student then begins creation of their own Susty Game Day Fit during the Susty Fashion Workshop.

Today we begin creating our own Susty Game Day Fits. Please make sure you’ve dropped off your items for the Clothes Swap in the designated spot.
Before we begin, let’s review some cool ways to upcycle clothes. You can use as many of these as you need to create a Susty Game Day Fit that best expresses your own personal style.
Slide 1
Tie dye a shirt or tee
Patch pants or shirts with fabric scraps using fabric glue
Slide 2
Personalize a shirt or jacket by adding the graphics from an old tee or sports jersey
Turn a shirt into a tanktop, crop top, or blouse
Slide 3
Turn a baggy tee into a dress
Turn a sweater into socks.
Slide 4
Add a pocket to a shirt
Turn jeans into shorts, a skirt, or a tote bag using fabric tape
Slide 5
Flare your jeans with fabric scraps
Turn a tee into a headband or scrunchie
Slide 6
Turn a tee into a long sleeve shirt by combining shirts

You've learned there are many ways to upcycle unworn clothes but may have never tried them before.
Don't worry. Jas made a video to show how easy it is to combine these methods to create a new style from old tees.
Let's check it out now.

Now it’s time to start the Susty Fashion Workshop. You will have time in class today and next week to use the clothes collected in the Clothes Swap and the tools available in the Workshop to create your own personal Susty Game Day Fits.
Before you get your bag of clothes from the Clothes Swap, I want to show you the tools available for you to use and a special spot for fabric scraps. To make sure there are enough tools for everyone, only take tools that you are going to use immediately and return them as soon as you are done.
Walk around Workshop to share location of available tools and describe how to use them. Be sure to note any tools that are not mobile and require a workspace (Tie-Dye station for example).
Now share the location of the student's bags from the previous week's Clothes Swap, fabric scrap box, and then move to the Clothes Swap location.
The remaining items from the clothes swap are here. Please add any fabric scraps to the scrap box right away so everyone else can use them.
When class ends today, please put your items back in your bag. We will store them here so you can continue working on them next week.
If you choose to create a tie-dye, you will need to bring it home today in a zip-lock bag. As Jas mentioned, please take it out of the bag when you get home (after two hours), remove the rubber bands, hang dry overnight, then wash the next day in cold water.
Don't forget to bring it back next week to complete your Fit.
Make sure to measure and mark your project before you begin to make sure fit is correct. To be as sustainable as possible, limit the waste created.
Remember, clothes are made for everyone and have no gender. If you don’t feel comfortable in pants and prefer skirts you can turn pants into skirt and if you prefer pants over a skirt you can turn a skirt into pants or use the fabric to make something you feel your most comfortable self in.
Are you all ready? Any questions?
Let’s go. I can’t wait to see the amazing styles you all create.
Start calling out student groups to get their bags from the previous week in any order you like.
