Welcome students to Jasmyne Spencer Presents: Runway to Sustainability, Powered by Angel City FC with a special message from NWSL star Jasmyne Spencer.
Present the Jasmyne Spencer Welcome Video.
Jasmyne just talked about the importance of sustainability and how she shares Susty Game Day fits with fans throughout the year.
Each of you will also create your own Susty Game Day Fit that you will get to share on the Angel City FC Runway at their home game on September 27. So make sure you are available on Friday, September 27th to go to the game. Transportation and tickets will be provided by Angel City FC.
In addition to inspiring thousands at the game, your Susty Game Day Fits will also inspire fans around the world through a short video Angel City will create with us as you all design and build your Susty Game Day Fit.
Clothes Swap:
Did you know the average person does not wear 50% of their clothes. Maybe they don’t fit right, aren’t comfortable, or they just don’t like them. These items are perfect to create our Fits. Next week, we need each of you to bring in clothes you or someone in your family doesn’t wear. If you are able, please bring 1-5 clean items including shirts, pants, shorts, shirts, sweatshirts, or sweaters. -
Before we begin learning how to make our own Susty Game Day Fits, let’s do a quick survey.

Thanks for taking the survey.
Now let’s talk a bit more about sustainability. All life on Earth depends on the environment. The natural resources that come from the environment include food, water, plants, and minerals. Sustainability is the idea that humans must live with the environment in a way that ensures there will be enough resources left for future generations to meet their own needs.
This includes making sure that everyone around the world, both now and in the future, have access to these critical resources.
Here’s an example of an easy way we can all be more sustainable.
Use a reusable water bottle instead of disposable plastic or paper ones. When you use a reusable bottle, you're not throwing away plastic every time you finish a drink. This helps keep plastic out of landfills and oceans, which is good for animals and our environment. Plus, you can decorate your bottle to make it unique!
Discussion:
What does sustainability mean to you? How would you explain it to a friend or family member?
-
We’ve just learned how important sustainability is. In fact, it’s more important than ever. The world’s population has exploded from 2 billion people to over 8 billion in less than 100 years. That would be like your class expanding from 25 students to 100 students. And the 75 new students all have to fit in your current classroom.
Our consumption of the world’s resources has grown with the population. In fact, people have used more materials in the last 60 years than in all previous history. What has been the result? Let’s check it out.

Discussion:
You’ve learned the definition of sustainability and have seen the impact humans have made to our climate. Why does this matter?
-
Now that we know about the collective impact humans have made on the planet, let’s examine the impact of something every human has and wears every day. Jas mentioned in her opening video the connection between the climate and our closet and the impacts our clothes have on the planet and the people who make them.
Discussion:
Who do you think makes your clothes? Where do they live? How old are they? What impacts do you think your clothes have on the planet and the people who make them?
Let’s take a closer look. Here’s a quick video that explains the top impacts of our clothes.
Present the Impacts of Your Clothes Video
-
Like most people, you are probably surprised by the impact of our clothes. That’s because many of the impacts are concentrated where our clothes are made and where clothes end up when we are done wearing them.
We just discussed the people who make our clothes. Let’s take a quick trip around the world to learn more about them and how our clothes are made.
