There are a lot of problems in our world, but it is important to remember that they are solvable! In fact, problem-solving is the driving force for the unprecedented progress we have enjoyed in the last few centuries.
As a species, we thrive by solving each problem we encounter along the way, and we have solved a lot of them to get to where we are now.
However, the new environment we have fought hard to create for ourselves also creates new types of problems – how do we sustain the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs?
The first step to solving a problem is identifying it, and the best way to address it is to start right here in our local community.
-
Divide students into small groups and hand out the Supporting Our Community Worksheet to each group.
Ask each group to discuss with their peers and identify 1 sustainability problem in their local community.
-
Ask each group to briefly present their findings to the class following the order of the worksheet.
Groups which have not completed their worksheet can present the parts which were completed.
Write each group’s problem, solution, or idea on the board.
-
After each group presentation, open the discussion to the entire class by asking:
What are your thoughts on the solutions that group came up with?
Can you think of any other ways to approach it?
