Welcome to CJ’s Training Camp: Sustainability

Introduction

Recent studies have demonstrated students are aware of sustainability, believe it is important, but critically don’t know exactly what it is, how it affects daily life, or how to pursue it in specific areas.  Loopt Foundation, CJ McCollum Foundation, Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and Looptworks have partnered together to address this foundational need.

CJ’s Training Camp: Sustainability will introduce students to sustainability concepts through a dynamic program using apparel as a vehicle. They will learn how clothes are made, meet the people who make them, complete a life cycle analysis of NBA star CJ McCollum’s game jersey, and finally develop and develop their own local sustainable service project that specifically reduces the environmental and human health impacts of apparel.

Through this process, students will go on a global exploration of the three pillars of sustainability: economic development, social development, and environmental protection as they learn the impacts of their wardrobe.  They will then develop their own local sustainable service project.

The curriculum is designed to comply with Oregon COVID-19 related guidelines and restrictions and Boys and Girls Clubs of Portland Metropolitan Area operational best practices.  This project focuses on the outcomes listed in the 2050 Vision for Materials Management in Oregon report; that Oregonians have access to the knowledge, capabilities, resources, and services required to use materials responsibly, producers make products sustainably, people live well and consume sustainably, and products have the most useful life possible after discard.

The curriculum created through this project, including a Teacher’s Guide, Lesson Plans, and associated resources, are all available digitally and specifically designed to be offered in after-school programs through existing staff and equipment. Lesson Plans include an overview, learning outcomes, skills, resources, required preparation, activities, and vocabulary.
