Professional and Olympic Athletes Join Forces to Revolutionize the Apparel Industry

EcoAthletes and Loopt Foundation are proud to announce the launch of #clothes4good, a 12-month international campaign led by EcoAthletes Champions and other climate-minded athletes to reduce the impact of our clothes and ultimately revolutionize the apparel industry.

“We invite the world to join our team of dedicated world class, climate-minded athletes in taking simple steps everyone can take to reduce the impact of our clothes,” said Lew Blaustein, President, EcoAthletes. “Eight billion people in the world wear clothes every day. #clothes4good provides our influential, inspirational athletes and their millions of followers with the tools to turn our clothes into a force for good.”

This dynamic campaign will:

  • Educate global consumers about the connection between their closet and the climate

  • Build awareness of the environmental and social impacts of our clothes

  • Generate consumer demand for products built with sustainable practices and living wages throughout the supply chain

  • Share simple, tangible ways that people can participate to make an impact

“It’s an honor to partner with this incredible group of athletes to build awareness about this critical issue,” said Lauren “Lu” Barnes, OL Reign (NWSL) Captain and Defender. “I’m confident fans around the world will join us in taking the actions needed to make our clothes more sustainable.”

“When you look at these data, it’s clear that changing our collective decisions on how clothes are made, what clothes are made of, how long we wear them, and where clothes go at end-of- life can meaningfully change the climate for the better,” offered Rhydian Cowley, two-time Australian Olympic race walker. “Apparel sponsors are everywhere in elite sport, often providing way more clothes than is needed, so athletes are in a unique position to work together to lead this change by engaging with both fans and sponsors. I'm proud to be involved with EcoAthletes’ #clothes4good initiative because I see it as a powerful yet easy way to effectively contribute to this cause.”

“Being involved with disrupting the apparel industry is personal for me,” reported Melissa Humana-Paredes, Canadian Olympic beach volleyball player and gold medalist at Commonwealth Games 2022. “I saw a video last year from the Atacama Desert in my native country of Chile, where the incredible wonder of the world was now a graveyard for the global fast-fashion industry with over 100,000 tons of clothing, many of them new items with price tags that weren’t sold or used). This has to change and using our platform as athletes through #clothes4good is an important start.”

Each month participating athletes will share a different #clothes4good action and associated hashtag through their social media platforms. These actions will provide solutions to address impacts at each stage of the lifecycle of our clothes:

#choose4good | #buy4good | #care4good | #share4good | #SWAG (Swear to Wear All Garments)

Fans and followers can join the campaign at Clothes4Good.net where they can learn more about each #clothes4good action and meet the participating athletes. They can also turn their awareness into action while inspiring others by completing a #clothes4good action on their social media platforms using the associated hashtag.

“In our increasingly divided world, sport continues to unite,” said Scott Welch, Executive Director, Loopt Foundation. “Athletes have become one of society’s most influential groups. Today these athletes have united to build global awareness around the impact of our clothes and provide the leadership to turn them into a force for good.”
